MWSS website hacked

MANILA, Philippines - Several hacker groups on Sunday, September 2, 2012, hacked the official website of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewage System (MWSS).

The groups identified themselves as Anonymous #OccupyPhilippines, Anonymous Butuan, PrivateX, #pR.is0n3r. Lo0p th3 Lo0p, l4stl00k, Anonymous Manila, and All Pinoy Hackers.

As of 2:57 pm on Sunday, the MWSS website contained a spinning logo of "Anonymous Philippines," with a link below that instructs visitors to "click for the reason."

The link leads to a YouTube video posted by user "AnonymousButuan" on August 31, 2012.

In the video, the group accused the MWSS, Maynilad Water Services Inc., and Manila Water Co. of cheating customers into paying for two cancelled projects. The group did not specific the projects that they were referring to. The group also alleged that the MWSS has been giving "excessive benefits" to its board members.

"We are fighting for the truth and free speech. People should not fear the government. The government should fear their people," the video said.

"We are anonymous, we are legion, we do not forgive, we do not forget, United as one, divided by none, the corrupt fear us, the honest support us, the heroic joins us, Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, it's too late to expect us!"

Changes in the MWSS

The MWSS has been on the spotlight recently, after they eliminated the illegal allowances of its employees.

Back in August, it was revealed that the company's drivers had been receiving up to P97,000 a month mainly in the form of bonuses.

"Illegal" bonuses included a birthday and State of the Nation Address bonus.

In an interview on Rappler's #TalkThursday, MWSS Chairman Ramon Alkipala dismissed accusations that the allowances of the agency's board members were "excessive." According to him, it is only a smear campaign in reaction to the reforms instituted by the board, including the slashing of employee benefits.

The 21-year-old got to know about the news on Saturday when she discovered a tweet on her page: “I wanna be with Harry Styles.”

She quickly deleted the message and told her 1.1 million followers she had contacted bosses at the social networking site about temporarily closing her account while resolving the problem, reports contactmusic.com.

“My Twitter has been hacked! Trying to get it frozen for a bit! Sorry guys,” she said.

NOIDA: Two members of the hacker group, "Indishell", and its offshoots were arrested on Saturday after an extensive investigation by the Gautam Budh Nagar cyber crime cell. The accused, who did BTech in computer science, were charged with hacking into an e-commerce website that specializes in mobile recharge. Cops said four members of the gang with pan-India operations were at large. 

The hackers have cheated a Delhi-based company of more than Rs 50 lakh, police said. The accused, Sumit Gupta (24) and Ankit Singh(22), are from Moradabad in UP, and are considered one of the "most sophisticated hackers in the country". They were arrested from Noida and booked under Sections 420 of the IPC and 66C of the IT Act, 2008. 

"We received a complaint from the head of recharge of Memory Electronics Pvt Ltd about the website being hacked," said Triveni Singh, DSP (cyber crime cell) GB Nagar. 

The IP address used by the hackers was located in Sector 62 of Noida. Cops then zeroed in on the duo, allegedly involved in scores of hacking cases. To siphon off the money, the hackers would bypass the cc avenue payment gateway, cops said. "After hacking into the server, the accused obtained administrative rights of the website. when users asked for recharge of their cellphones, DTH cards, net cards, etc, the hackers would just key in the cell number and the amount to be topped up. However, no bill would be generated as the hackers had bypassed the payment page," Triveni said. 

"This way the recharge company would be debited every time without a bill, leading to losses worth several lakhs," the DSP said. 

The other accused who are yet to be arrested are also BTech graduates from across India. "Shrinivas, facebook name 'neo', is from Kohlapur in Maharashtra; Ajay Dhaka, alias dark look, is from Jaipur; Raman Kumar Rana, facebook name 'google warrior', is a resident of Pathankot; and Manmohan, alias 'mack', is from Muradabad," Triveni said. 

"We have found that Shrinivas is the founder and president of a cyber security and anti-hacking organization. But now he is involved in hacking himself and has made a business out of it," Triveni said.

Mozilla Issues Java Block and Notifications for Firefox

Mozilla has implemented the solution to the Java exploits that have been wreaking havoc this past week. A few days ago, Mozilla announced plans to disable the vulnerable plugin in Firefox, but also provide a notification system to let users know that the plugin has been blocked when they visit sites that require it.

That system is now live and users will start seeing the notifications soon. In the meantime, Oracle also released an emergency update to Java fixing the vulnerabilities actively exploited in the wild.

"We have enabled an update notification that will show up every time a user visits a site with a Java applet using a vulnerable Java plugin. The notification points to our Plugin Check page, which should assist users in getting Java up to date," Mozilla announced.

"This block will be initially applied to Windows users and Linux users who have the Oracle version of the Java RE, but we expect to extend it to Mac OS X (where the majority of users are unaffected) and the IcedTea plugin on Linux," it said.

The block is still in place for vulnerable versions, but at least users have a patched version available. Initially, it wasn't clear whether Oracle would update Java ahead of schedule. Mozilla's block would have affected all Java versions, though users would have been able to re-enable the plugin if they needed it.

Mozilla issues this type of blocks quite regularly, unfortunately, to either disable vulnerable plugins or ones that are causing a lot of crashes in Firefox.

The issue should be less of a problem once Firefox gets a proper implementation of the click-to-play plugins feature. The feature is built into Firefox 15 but is disabled by default. Click-to-play plugins should be ready for a wide release by the time Firefox 18 comes out, a few months from now.
